REFLECTION:
In this section we learned about discourse community and we had learning goals that we were supposed to learn while writing the paper. Some of those goals were learning what a discourse and a discourse community are and applying them to our life now and future. We also had to determine if the book was considered a discourse community and explain why or why it wasn’t. Some things that I learned were that discourse and discourse community isn’t the same thing. I always thought they were the same thing but while reading I learned that they aren’t. The most difficult thing that I come across was taking what the authors said and applying it to my future career. Since they have a higher knowledge it was hard to understand what they were saying and apply it to my major. One thing that I found easy was finding quotes that relate to what I was saying and properly citing them. I feel like my paper was above average but not over the top. Some things I had a difficult time with and it was hard to get my point across in the appropriate manner. But I also feel like I did a good job of explaining the different authors and properly doing the quote sandwich, which was big part of this paper.
DISCUSSION POST # 3:
Tony Mirabelli examined literacy by looking and examining it to see how it is used in a restaurant. He examined the Italian-American restaurant that we was a waiter at for two years. On one of the websites he looks at he finds the menu and sees that the first page was all about gossip of different waiters and chefs. He found out that most of the criticism portrays waitresses as ignorant and stupid and knows that it isn't new.
Literacy has different definitions depending on what type of institution you attend. For example, literacy continues to be defined by consideration of achievement and by abstract, standardized tests of individual students in most societal institutions. On the other hand, literate only has one definition and is defined as having control over an association by using the correct literacy, language and way of thinking.
In the study they study different waiters from Lou's: John, Harvey and Mirabelli. He studies and examines the menu of restaurants. When he studied Harvey he was concerned because he didn't know the menu and they understood why he was so concerned. "Since the menu is the most important printed text by waiters and waitresses, and not knowing it can dramatically affect how they are able to do their work"(Mirabelli). The menu is a genre itself. Harvey's understanding of the menu is more than just his food knowledge but also how he has power and control. Mirabelli believes that the customer has the authority over the waiter or waitress.
I learned a few things from Mirabelli. For example, I learned that, "Literacy practices in this environment are nothing like those found in traditional classrooms, but they might be more comparable to those found in the emergency ward of a hospital or an air-traffic controller's tower." Interaction with texts and participants take place in a rapid discussion of small chunks. I understand this as there is literacy in a restaurant discussion it is just different from what people think of a traditional discussion. Also, that in dinner settings most conversation is short and isn't long drawn out discussions.

NOTES: I picked this as my third discussion post because I think that I had the most trouble with understanding Mirabelli. The way that he describes everything is hard for me to understand and fully grasp. The set up was confusing to me and I didn't get the whole picture he was trying to explain. I wanted to put this post on here because I wanted to show my work when I don't get what I am writing about. It shows my weaknesses and allows me to learn off of them.

DISCUSSION POST OTHER # 2:
In Mirabelli's writing, he described how restaurants worked as discourse communities as well as going into depth all the different aspects that go into working at a restaurant. He also looked as the restaurant from the consumer side, which I thought was very engaging. I liked this write up because last class, before the idea of restaurants being introduced in the discourse communities unit, I had no idea that they would be related but Mirabelli cleared the new idea up for me. Aside from labeling restaurants as discourse communities, what I thought was interesting was the fact that waitresses working in diners only need to have a written and spoken language level from that of a 9th grader. I liked how Mirabelli gave an example of Lou's restaurant. which was given as a case in which a restaurant was successful. When I think of discourse communities I initially think of more intelligent groups of people, somewhat business related. That's why I initially was surprised when introduced to this idea. I think that Mirabelli labels restaurants as discourse communities because everyone involved works toward a common purpose which is to make sure that customers have an enjoyable stay. This includes the cooks, the waiters, and those who sit guests. Labeling them allows these individuals to work as a unit. He mentions the menu as a genre which I thought was interesting, some to make you not understand. After reading this discussion I'm going to be more attentive when at a restaurant and pay attention to detail that was mentioned by Mirabelli. Also, if I ever get a job at a restaurant, I'll be sure to act in a way that benefits the restaurant as a discourse community.
NOTES: I picked this as my second discussion post written by someone else because I had a hard time understanding Mirabelli and I think that this post helped clear up some of my confusion. This post did a good job of restating and summarizing some of the main points that Mirabelli made. They helped explain why the restaurant could be labeled as a discourse community and gave examples that made it be labeled as a discourse community.
